AWS said on October 29 that you can now use your existing Step Functions workflows, both Standard and Express, as tools for AI agents through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, which connects agents to tools over MCP. The agent decides when to run a workflow and what input to pass. Step Functions then runs each step exactly as you defined it, so a multi-step process like a refund (eligibility check, manager approval, credit) follows the same order every time. Agents can also look up workflow runs, for example to report which runs failed overnight and at which step. It's available in every AWS Region that has AgentCore Gateway, at standard Step Functions and AgentCore Gateway rates.
