GitHub made Copilot Fusion generally available on October 28. Instead of picking a model, you pick Fusion and an effort level (Standard, High, or Max), and Copilot decides which models to use for each prompt: one model alone, a cheap model that escalates to a stronger one if a quality check fails, or a draft-review-revise loop between two models. GitHub says Fusion Max scored 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, within two points of Claude Code with Opus 5.5 Max. It did that at about half the average API cost per task, about half the tokens, and about 40% less time. You're billed for each model it uses at that model's standard rate, and for a limited time paid Copilot plans get a 30% discount on model costs with Fusion. It's on all Copilot plans in VS Code, the GitHub Copilot app, Copilot CLI, and JetBrains IDEs, and admins control which models it can use.
